To mark the anniversary of the Original 1227 design, Anglepoise will unveil a new limited numbered edition of 400 pieces of the lamp. It will have a unique hand polished metal finish, hand-spun aluminium and contrasting brass components. It comes complete with a burgundy twisted cord cable. The machined brass fork block will carry an individually etched number on the back. Additionally, there will also be a specially designed 90th Celebratory logo etched into one of the steps of the base. During Milan Design Week this new edition will be on display, along with artefacts from the Anglepoise archive. These illustrate the brand’s storied history.

Visually unchanged since its introduction in the 1930s, the Original 1227 lamp, designed by George Carwardine, remains a signature product. It is instantly recognisable as an Anglepoise lamp. Since its creation, the lamp quickly gained iconic status. It became admired worldwide and set the standard by which other task lights are measured. An Anglepoise lamp’s practical, problem-solving design, balletic engineering and ability to place light exactly where you want it, has made it an unparalleled companion to creative endeavors. Over the years it has illuminated the studios of Pablo Picasso, Barbara Hepworth and Roald Dahl, amongst many others.

“The lamp’s lasting appeal lies in the fact that it solves a genuine problem and has no frivolous parts. Its anthropomorphic form gives it a certain charm, too. It moves like a human being; it is that quirkiness, along with technical perfection, that makes the lamp inherently British.” ~ Simon Terry, Custodian and fifth generation owner of Anglepoise.

Following the successes of the Anglepoise + National Trust collaborations Sage Green in 2021 and Buttermilk Yellow in 2022, the iconic lighting designer has announced a third colour, Neptune Blue, for the 2023 collection.

This modern, timeless tone is inspired by coastal references; an ode to Britain’s beautiful, dramatic and diverse landscape. To date, Anglepoise has donated £35,000 to The Homewood, an early 20th century villa in Surrey designed by architect Patrick Gwynne, now cared for by the National Trust. Aligned with Anglepoise’s vision of the future; The Homewood represents the commitment to design as a lifelong companion, just as an Anglepoise lamp itself is passed from one generation to the next.

Through sales generated from the Neptune Blue collection, a minimum of £25,000 will be given to the National Trust in 2023/24, to continue caring for The Homewood.

Simon Terry, Chairman of Anglepoise said: “We are incredibly proud to be working with the National Trust for a third year and even more delighted to be raising awareness of its people-powered Neptune Coastline Campaign. The climate emergency has only heightened the need for the National Trust’s work and I am thrilled that we can help play a part, however small, in supporting the National Trust.”

This collection adds to our previous two collections with them. Including Sage Green and Butter Milk Yellow

Building on their fruitful eight-year partnership, iconic British brand Anglepoise has once again teamed up with Paul Smith to release a collaboration collection of lamps. The new Edition Six in white, designed to accompany the all-black Edition Five, adds the Paul Smith Artist Stripe to Sir Kenneth Grange’s classic Type 75 silhouette, widely considered an icon of classic industrial design.

With its milk white finish and pastel graduated stripe, the Edition Six is a softer take on the Edition Five’s bold, bright palette and full black colour drench. Together, the lamps add another dimension to this ongoing partnership which now comprises six different designs, each one unmistakably Paul Smith, a designer renowned for his master of colour and signature use of stripes. Notably, Editions Five and Six are the first to bear the Paul Smith Artist Stripe, a design inspired by palettes in a painter’s workshop, and offer a sophisticated, minimal aesthetic.

Adam Wade, Technical Director at Anglepoise: “With each Anglepoise + Paul Smith design we have taken a different creative direction while staying true to Sir Kenneth Grange’s much-loved Type 75 lamp silhouette. We have designed one lamp in all black, and one in all white so they will work brilliantly as a monochrome pair. The Anglepoise + Paul Smith Edition Five is elegant, but with a fun playful side. The new Edition Six is classic and clean but with the quirky addition of the stripe.”

Anglepoise + Paul Smith Editions Five and Six are designed to complement each other and look particularly striking when paired together. They are available as desk lamps in two different sizes as well as a floor lamp. For accessibility and ease of use the switch is integrated into the shade and both Editions boast black springs and fittings. Anglepoise + Paul Smith Edition Five is available now and Edition Six will be available at the beginning of September in the UK, USA and EU direct from anglepoise.com, paulsmith.com and selected retailers.

Following the successful launch our collaboration with the National Trust in 2021, we are adding a new colour to the collection. Taking inspiration from the modernist colour palette, the new Buttermilk Yellow collection launches in September 2022. Anglepoise is donating a minimum of £20,000 in 2022/23 to support The Homewood in Surrey, an early 20th century villa cared for by the National Trust, built by architect Patrick Gwynne.

Michaela Davis, Brand Licensing Manager for the National Trust says “To see how popular our initial collection was, has been really encouraging. This extension to the collection is an delicious way for people to introduce striking design into their homes – modernist or not. We’re really grateful for all the income the collaboration has generated, allowing us to care for The Homewood and shine a light on this property.”

The Anglepoise + National Trust Buttermilk Yellow range will be available to buy from anglepoise.com and leading stockists from September 2022. We have since added Neptune Blue Collection to the collaboration.

New colours for the 90 Mini Mini Desk Lamps https://www.anglepoise.com/journal/anglepoise-extends-the-90-mini-mini-collection/ Thu, 18 Nov 2021 12:50:00 +0000 https://www.anglepoise.com/?p=7457 Three new shades in a beautiful painted finish join the existing 90 Mini Mini lamps.

We have extended our 90 Mini Mini range to include three new soothing shades and a new painted finish. The satin finish 90 Mini Mini comes in Jasmine White, Biscuit Beige and Kelp Green, a stark contrast to the existing range of hard anodised lamps.

Originally launched in 2018, the 90 Mini Mini is now one of the most popular lamps in the Anglepoise range.

At half the size of a standard desk lamp it is thoughtfully designed to fit anywhere, perfect if you are working in a small space or want brilliant directional lighting in a compact home. A great choice for the hobbyist, the light has a USB plug so that it can be powered by mains electrics or plugged into a laptop – an ideal solution for remote working and desk hopping.

Uniquely, the 90 Mini Mini has a long-life, dimmable, low-energy LED module, which is integrated into the shade so that the level of illumination can be changed throughout the day or in line with the task in hand. Just like all new Anglepoise lights, the 90 Mini Mini is designed to hold its position with the lightest touch, so you can rotate and tilt the shade and move the arm, making it as practical as it is beautiful.

Available across all its collections, our lifetime guarantee is a promise to service and maintain any lights bought by domestic customers and is a response to the current trend of products built without longevity in mind and destined for landfill.

The new 90 Mini Mini is available on our website and selected retailers from November.

“166 Years in the making and 3 years in the doing” is how our Joint MD and Owner Simon Terry describes Spring Light, our new book by author Jonathan Glancey. It shines a light on our design history with pages of treasured intricate illustrations, stunning photography, special memories and over 90 years of design influence.

Starting with a Foreward by Sir John Hegarty, who dissects the makings of a brand icon, the reader is then guided through Angelpoise’s history by Jonathan Glancey, starting with an introduction to the design, George Carwardine’s beginnings and even Anglepoise during the Second World War.

We get to peek through the archives and experience the launch of the Model 1227 through the accompanying advertising of the time, we see how beloved the ‘humble lamp’ became in films and cinema and, we learn of its development from the 1970s through to the 2000s. With Simon at the helm, the 2000s heralded working relationships with industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange as well as collaborations with the likes of Paul Smith and Margaret Howell, all of which have helped rejuvenate the brand for a new generation.

In a chapter titled Undimmed Light: the future of Anglepoise and new designs, we also experience more recent innovations and get a glimpse of what the future may hold too.

Spring light is the perfect coffee table book for Anglepoise fans and design lovers alike. It adds to Jonathan’s portfolio of architectural books including: The Story of Architecture, Lost Buildings, 20th Century Architecture, Architecture: A Visual History, London: Bread and Circuses and John Betjeman on Churches.

Inspired by The Homewood, our National Trust collaboration is an opportunity to illuminate the beauty of modernist design. Our first joint collection comprises a table, a desk, and a floor lamp in soothing Sage Green. A minimum of £15,000 from sales of this collection will support the National Trust in ensuring The Homewood is maintained and loved for future generations.

“Green, as a colour and philosophy is at the heart of everything we do. We care for 500 places, including 250,000 hectares of countryside – from the peaks of Snowdonia and the Lake District, through to moorland, forests and parkland. This collaboration is generating income to help us care for these special places for everyone forever and shine a light on some of our lesser known architectural gems.” Michaela Davies, Brand Licensing Manager, National Trust

Located amid a picturesque woodland garden near Esher in Surrey, The Homewood was designed by Patrick Gwynne for his parents. The self-taught architect put his unique vision into every aspect of the early 20th-century country villa’s design and details, including the furnishings, to produce an unconventional but luxurious family country villa. It was completed in the early summer of 1938 and Gwynne lived in the house for the rest of his life, continuing to keep the building fashionably up to date until his death in 2003.

Produced by Anglepoise under licence from The National Trust (Enterprises) Limited (a subsidiary of The National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, England & Wales registered charity number 205846).

Coming soon: we are pairing our coveted Margaret Howell colours with the equally loved Type 75 Mini Wall Light meaning you can adorn your walls with lights in Saxon Blue, Sienna and Yellow Ochre colours.

Anglepoise has a successful and long-standing relationship with the contemporary British clothing designer, spanning nearly twenty years. Our first collaboration of the limited-edition Type 3 Anglepoise in pale turquoise, originally launching in 2004, which was followed by the popular Type 75 collaboration in 2012. The current three colours are already available across desk and floor lamps, but this is the first time the partnership has designed a wall light together.

Margaret Howell has frequently championed the Anglepoise lamp, admiring the similar design qualities that are the essence of her men’s and women’s clothing: simplicity, functionality, authenticity, and timelessness. Anglepoise’s Type 75, designed in 2004 by British industrial product designer Sir Kenneth Grange, reinterprets the original 1930s Anglepoise design. Its clean lines combine with the perfect balance and range of movement made possible by the unique spring mechanism that defines the brand.

The Type 75 Wall Light – Margaret Howell Edition is priced at £100.00 in the UK and will be available from the end of June.

Trade partners, including the A&D community, specifiers and interior designers, interested in the Margaret Howell Wall Lights should contact their sales manager or email hello@anglepoise.com to find out more about stock availability.
