This is part of a user guide, part 1: kitchen/dining room lighting of a 5-part series of guides on using the iconic Original 1227™ range at home. For part 2 (living room lighting). For part 3 (bedroom lighting). Written by design writer Charlotte Abrahams.

In the beginning there was the Original 1227™. Launched by Anglepoise® in 1935 as a result of the pioneering work of automotive engineer George Carwardine, this three spring, articulated task light set the standard by which all other desk lights are now measured and has become an internationally acclaimed design icon. And that includes the garden.

The 1930s design has been refined and re-interpreted over the years to suit changing technologies and tastes, and the classic desk lamp has been joined by a whole family of Original 1227™ models ranging from the compact Mini to the over-sized Giant, via brass trimmed versions and our latest iteration, an Original 1227™ Mini Collection with bone china shade. Versatile, functional, unfailingly chic and built to last a lifetime, there is something in the Anglepoise® Original 1227™ family for every room in the house.

With so many options to choose from, deciding what to use where could be confusing. With that in mind, we have put together a room-by-room guide packed with useful tips and brilliant ideas to help you light up you home. We will begin in the room most of us consider to be the heart of the home: the kitchen/diner.

Kitchen / Dining Room Lighting

Good light is the corner stone of any properly functioning kitchen. Cooking requires focused task light– you don’t want to be chopping garlic in the gloom after all – but these days, kitchens often also multi task as dining and living rooms and that means thinking about the atmospheric lighting too. It sounds complicated but, with a bit of planning, achieving perfection is easy.

Task Lighting

This is the type of light you need to illuminate your work tops and cooking area. The secret of a good task light is not brightness but positioning – get it wrong and you will find yourself preparing food in the shadows. Task light should always come from behind, or to the side, of where you are working and the light source should be below eye level.

Work tops: Wall lights are a very effective way of lighting worktops. Choose a design with a flexible shade that can be rotated to direct the light precisely where you need it, such as the Original 1227™ Wall Light which features a neat back plate with integral switch, or, for even more flexibility, the Original 1227™ Wall Mounted Light. Both designs are available in two sizes, standard and Mini.

Alternatively, if your worktop runs wall to wall, try lighting it with a row of Original 1227™ Pendants suspended from the ceiling. Hang them low so that you can’t see the bulb (the braided cords are a feature in themselves) at evenly spaced intervals above the work surface. There are 4 sizes of pendant to choose from so pick the size that works best proportionally with the size of your room.

Islands: Kitchen islands are often places where friends and family gather to chat and snack as much as work stations and their central position means that they are a major design feature too so you need to go for a statement light. The Original 1227™ Maxi Pendant in brass would be a good choice. Hang it low enough to conceal the bulb, but high enough so that it casts good general light across the island. A line of Original 1227™ Mini Ceramic pendants pendants over a smaller island would look the part.

Of course, pendants are not the only option for work stations. One or more Original 1227™ Desk Lamps would give you functional, flexible light oozing with industrial chic.

Ambient lighting

This is the lighting that turns your kitchen from a working laboratory into a welcoming, domestic space. Small kitchens may need nothing more than a single overhead pendant that bathes the entire room in a good general light (the Original 1227™ Pendant comes in four sizes), but larger spaces, particularly if there’s room for a comfy seat in a corner, may benefit from a floor lamp as well. For maximum flexibility, go for one with an angled shade such as the Original 1227™ Floor Lamp that you can use as both an ambient uplighter (tilt the shade towards the ceiling) and a focused task light.

If your kitchen has a dining table, try lighting it with a single over-sized pendant (the Original 1227™ Giant Pendant comes in a range of stunning colours) or a cluster of smaller Original 1227™ Mini Ceramic Pendants for a contemporary take on the chandelier.

What bulbs can I use in my Anglepoise product is a question we get asked a lot and it can get really confusing for everyone really. As there are just so many different types of bulbs and different fittings on the market. So we will try to shine a light on the subject and simplify this as much as possible for you.

Original 1227 & Type 75

With all our Original 1227 and Type 75 Desk and Table Lamps, a high-efficiency E27 (for UK & EU)/E26 (for US) LED bulb is supplied in the pack providing the equivalent light output of a traditional 40W incandescent bulb with a warm white light.

Traditional incandescent bulbs are no longer available for purchase across the UK and Europe as the world moves to more energy efficient LED technology.

The supplied bulb will provide many years of use, at the same time saving on the running costs of the lamp.

If there is a need to change the bulb the following is a short guide, note the bulb fittings on all Anglepoise products made after 2000 are all E27 (for UK & EU)/E26 (for US) (ES) screw in bulbs and not BC Bayonet type. (However, please note that the rewire service and spares for older pre 2000 products may still use a BC Bayonet type. Check individual details)

bulb-info.jpg

A local supermarket, hardware, DIY store, or online retailer should be able to readily supply the suggested bulbs. Click here to view an equivalent we’ve found in Asda or for a smaller, brighter bulb click here for one we’ve found available at John Lewis.

The colour of the light produced by the bulb may be expressed as a number, typically <3000K is warm white, 4000K is Cool White and 6500K is equivalent to daylight.

Lamps purchased in the UK or Europe require either an E27 (or for the smaller products)
an E14 bulb.

Lamps purchased in the US require an E26, A19 or A15 bulb.

The label inside the shade indicates the type and maximum wattage.

As a side note, for our sprung desk lamps, weight is important – the bulb should weigh between 25-60 grams. As bulb manufacturers don’t always specify the weight of bulbs on their packaging, we suggest a pragmatic approach: take the non-functioning bulb into your local supermarket or hardware store and weigh the bulb you are planning to buy against your existing bulb.

All bulbs supplied with a product are designed to be the correct weight to allow your product to balance properly.

Our wall and pendant lights are not so sensitive to weight. Most LED bulbs will be suitable. For wall lights choose a smaller style bulb such as a golf ball to ensure it doesn’t protrude from the shade.

Type 80

Our Type 80 Range of table, wall and pendants are all supplied with a compact LED bulb which allows light to glow through the light escape detail at the top of the shade as well as below.

There are many compatible E27 LED bulbs available (check the shade label for maximum wattage), but for a bulb with a similar effect as the one supplied see below (please note, these are also dimmable bulbs):

ASDA

Screwfix

John Lewis – Option 1

John Lewis – Option 2

Please note these are external suppliers so we cant guarantee that these bulbs won’t stay in stock or be discontinued.

90 Mini Mini

The Anglepoise 90 Mini Mini integrated LED bulb has a lifespan of over 20,000 hours in normal use, with potentially slight reductions in light levels after this time. So it should continue working for many years. If it malfunctions or stops working, the light module can be replaced. In this case then please contact us

Let your imagination get to work.

If you’re working from home in a dark and cluttered corner, it’s hard to get motivated. So, we thought we’d brighten your day with these impressive desks in real-life home offices, ably assisted by the most stylish workhorse of all – the Anglepoise lamp.

Up to the task

The Original 1227 is the modern reincarnation of our first task lamp, invented by automotive engineer George Carwardine – but it’s not all work and no play. Its perfectly poised profile and responsive spring mechanism makes it both a handy tool and a joyful addition to any desk.

It’s versatile, too. Just take this Jet Black 1227, styled in two very different ways. You could lean into its vintage design by matching it with a glass-topped table and rattan dining chair.

Just your Type 75

Or you could contrast that business-like functionality with softer elements in the room to create a relaxed cottage industry of your very own.

But if all your surfaces are spoken for, don’t despair – just get a lamp with a clamp. Fixing an Original 1227 to the wall with a bracket helps to dramatically frame your workspace and brings a warm pool of light to even the darkest corner.

Our bestselling Type 75 desk lamp, designed by Sir Kenneth Grange, comes in many dazzling incarnations. The definitive version in Jet Black is a modernist masterpiece based on a 1970s Anglepoise design, with a simple bell-shaped shade and classic profile. As you can see from this smart, monochrome home office, it becomes the focal point of the room– and you could build on the retro look with other 70s details, like a groovy fur throw.

Treat your desk to a mini marvel

When desk space is at a premium, a mini Anglepoise is a WFH essential. In the Original 1227 range alone there are plenty of looks to choose from. This Dove Grey mini with stepped base is inspired by the original 1930s Terry lamp, while this white version with pyramid-shaped base not only brings a dash mid-century cool to your desk, but it’s easier to switch off at the end of the day.

The Type 75 also comes in a smaller size, bringing a dash of mini modernism to your workspace. This lamp in Slate Grey offers a grounding source of calm during a stressful day (but don’t get caught cat napping…)

Alternatively, if you need some get up and go, give yourself a boost with the 90 Mini Mini. Whatever colour you choose, it’s a brilliant lamp to have by your side, with a dimmable LED bulb that lasts for up to 20,000 hours – ample time to get your next work project off the ground.

Small bedroom lighting solutions https://www.anglepoise.com/journal/small-bedroom-lighting-solutions/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 09:43:00 +0000 https://www.anglepoise.com/?p=80427 At Anglepoise, we have a strong focus on balance, and there are three types of lighting you need to consider for a small bedroom – ambient, accent, and task.

Layer Lighting

Yes, we’re starting with lighting, and sure, we might be a little bias; but taking the time to light a small room correctly is the difference between cosy and poky. There’s no way around this. One big bright light blasting from the ceiling will only showcase how small the bedroom actually is. Then on the other side of the scale, too little lighting will make a small room feel dark and dingy. Getting that happy medium is a must.

At Anglepoise, we have a strong focus on balance, and there are three types of lighting you need to consider for a small bedroom – ambient, accent, and task.

Ambient is your overall lighting and in most cases is an overhead light. When picking ambient lighting for a small bedroom we recommend nothing too bright – warm lighting has an undeniable impact on the overall look and feel of your space.

Instead of a traditional overhead light, wall lighting not only saves on space but also provides a dimmer, softer glow to provide a chill vibe that’s ideal for a bedroom. Something small, unobstructive but with enough power to actually light the room is your aim – for example the Type 80 W2 Wall Light is a great choice here. Utilising a wall light available in various colours means you can match your light to your wall colour for a modern, minimalistic aesthetic.

Accent lighting

Next is accent lighting, which is an excellent method of drawing attention to a single point in the room. In a small bedroom this might already be taken care of with your ambient lighting (if done effectively), unless you’ve given each space a zone and want to emphasize it. Splitting your bedroom into zones will help keep areas tidy whilst giving you the feeling of space – a designated study section, clothing section and relaxing section means each aspect has been carefully thought out. We recommend desk and table lamps next to the bed to help zone in on that comfort spot and make the room seem bigger.

Task lighting

Finally, is task lighting, which is where Anglepoise really excels. Our table lamps have graced some of the world’s most illustrious workspaces, and lighting that helps you serve a purpose isn’t to be overlooked. A small room doesn’t mean you can’t have a nice area to work in. Save space by extending a furniture’s purpose. Doubling a cabinet as a desk and making sure you have a dedicated lighting zone for it can save space whilst creating a harmonious area to focus in.

No matter what the lighting purpose, there are a few rules you should follow to help make a small space look bigger. Soft, warm lighting is your friend, and we wouldn’t be recommending our giant floor lamps in a hurry. Instead, go for a mini lamp to save on space. Double up to have two bedside lamps, and twist and turn your lamp to make sure you’re only lighting the areas you need at any given time to help make a tranquil atmosphere.

So, what does this all mean? Basically, ignore the big light. Background, dimmable, low energy lighting is the key to making a tiny room feel cosy. Don’t blast the lighting thinking brighter is better, a small bedroom should be lit sensitively. If you make things too bright, you’ll only showcase how small the room really is.

Clutter Begone

Next up is storage. Sticking a huge chest of drawers into a small bedroom isn’t really going to cut it. Sure, you can fit a lot in it, but if the furniture hogs too much floor space it will end up dwarfing the rest of the room and forcing people to tip toe around it.

Instead, streamline your storage to maximize efficiency and space. Like we mentioned earlier, doubling a piece’s purpose helps you do exactly this. Your storage furniture should not only keep things tidy, but also showcase some of your favorite pieces to help give a small bedroom character. Add a shelf with cabinets to keep the clutter hidden behind cupboard doors, then use the open shelf space to showcase and illuminate art, decorations or even your favorite shoes (that you have nowhere else to store) to give a room personality whilst making sure each belonging has a home.

That’s why we prefer modular cabinets and shelves when it comes to small storage solutions, like this collection of modular furniture from Shelved. Being able to tweak and move how you store and light your items gives you more options when it comes to keeping a small space tidy. It’s important to have at least one area of floor space so your bedroom can “breath,” try not to make corridors between your furniture, and opt for slimmer designs where you can.

For more home and style tips, see our inspirations of real bedrooms and hotels and hospitality case studies, alternatively you can browse our full collection of bedroom lighting here. You can also discover Shelved and their modular storage solutions here to complete the look.
