To mark the anniversary of the Original 1227 design, Anglepoise will unveil a new limited numbered edition of 400 pieces of the lamp. It will have a unique hand polished metal finish, hand-spun aluminium and contrasting brass components. It comes complete with a burgundy twisted cord cable. The machined brass fork block will carry an individually etched number on the back. Additionally, there will also be a specially designed 90th Celebratory logo etched into one of the steps of the base. During Milan Design Week this new edition will be on display, along with artefacts from the Anglepoise archive. These illustrate the brand’s storied history

Visually unchanged since its introduction in the 1930s, the Original 1227 lamp, designed by George Carwardine, remains a signature product. It is instantly recognisable as an Anglepoise lamp. Since its creation, the lamp quickly gained iconic status. It became admired worldwide and set the standard by which other task lights are measured. An Anglepoise lamp’s practical, problem-solving design, balletic engineering and ability to place light exactly where you want it, has made it an unparalleled companion to creative endeavors. Over the years it has illuminated the studios of Pablo Picasso, Barbara Hepworth and Roald Dahl, amongst many others.

“The lamp’s lasting appeal lies in the fact that it solves a genuine problem and has no frivolous parts. Its anthropomorphic form gives it a certain charm, too. It moves like a human being; it is that quirkiness, along with technical perfection, that makes the lamp inherently British.” ~ Simon Terry, Custodian and fifth generation owner of Anglepoise.

We are delighted to unveil our fifth collaboration with renowned designer, Paul Smith. The Anglepoise + Paul Smith Edition Five, available exclusively from www.anglepoise.com and paulsmith.com from November, comprises two desk lamps (Mini and Standard size) and a floor lamp and builds on Paul’s ‘classic with a twist’ design philosophy.

Where our previous Paul Smith collaborations have maximised on Paul’s mastery of colour, the Edition Five takes a different approach and features the Artist Stripe on a pared back, pure black version of the Type 75 Anglepoise, itself designed by Sir Kenneth Grange.

Adam Wade, Technical Director at Anglepoise: “By creating a design that is head-to-toe black – from screws and fittings through to our signature springs – we bring focus to the purity of Kenneth’s Type 75 design. For the first time the Paul Smith Artist Stripe features on an Anglepoise lamp and so we also get an instantly recognisable flourish befitting of Paul Smith’s name.  The Anglepoise + Paul Smith Edition Five is elegant, fun and just a little bit eccentric; a future classic in the making.”

This new collection comes at a time when Anglepoise has stepped up its commitment to combating a world without fast homeware through the introduction of its Lifetime Guarantee. Anglepoise has introduced the guarantee on all its products used in a domestic setting to stem the flow of products destined for landfill and remind people that good design goes beyond aesthetics. The heirlooms of tomorrow should be repairable, reusable and, as a last resort, recyclable.

“166 Years in the making and 3 years in the doing” is how our Joint MD and Owner Simon Terry describes Spring Light, our new book by author Jonathan Glancey. It shines a light on our design history with pages of treasured intricate illustrations, stunning photography, special memories and over 90 years of design influence.

Starting with a Foreward by Sir John Hegarty, who dissects the makings of a brand icon, the reader is then guided through Angelpoise’s history by Jonathan Glancey, starting with an introduction to the design, George Carwardine’s beginnings and even Anglepoise during the Second World War.

We get to peek through the archives and experience the launch of the Model 1227 through the accompanying advertising of the time, we see how beloved the ‘humble lamp’ became in films and cinema and, we learn of its development from the 1970s through to the 2000s. With Simon at the helm, the 2000s heralded working relationships with industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange as well as collaborations with the likes of Paul Smith and Margaret Howell, all of which have helped rejuvenate the brand for a new generation.

In a chapter titled Undimmed Light: the future of Anglepoise and new designs, we also experience more recent innovations and get a glimpse of what the future may hold too.

Spring light is the perfect coffee table book for Anglepoise fans and design lovers alike. It adds to Jonathan’s portfolio of architectural books including: The Story of Architecture, Lost Buildings, 20th Century Architecture, Architecture: A Visual History, London: Bread and Circuses and John Betjeman on Churches.

Coming soon: we are pairing our coveted Margaret Howell colours with the equally loved Type 75 Mini Wall Light meaning you can adorn your walls with lights in Saxon Blue, Sienna and Yellow Ochre colours.

Anglepoise has a successful and long-standing relationship with the contemporary British clothing designer, spanning nearly twenty years. Our first collaboration of the limited-edition Type 3 Anglepoise in pale turquoise, originally launching in 2004, which was followed by the popular Type 75 collaboration in 2012. The current three colours are already available across desk and floor lamps, but this is the first time the partnership has designed a wall light together.

Margaret Howell has frequently championed the Anglepoise lamp, admiring the similar design qualities that are the essence of her men’s and women’s clothing: simplicity, functionality, authenticity, and timelessness. Anglepoise’s Type 75, designed in 2004 by British industrial product designer Sir Kenneth Grange, reinterprets the original 1930s Anglepoise design. Its clean lines combine with the perfect balance and range of movement made possible by the unique spring mechanism that defines the brand.

The Type 75 Wall Light – Margaret Howell Edition is priced at £100.00 in the UK and will be available from the end of June.

Trade partners, including the A&D community, specifiers and interior designers, interested in the Margaret Howell Wall Lights should contact their sales manager or email hello@anglepoise.com to find out more about stock availability.

Iconic British lighting brand, Anglepoise, has taken one of its most classic designs and reimagined it to make the new Type 75 Mini Table Lamp.

The original Type 75, launched in 2004 and often cited as Design Director Sir Kenneth Grange’s most favoured design, was itself his reinterpretation of an original Anglepoise design for the 21st century. Its pared-back aesthetic and versatility has made the Type 75 a best-selling collection worldwide.

New for Autumn 2020, Anglepoise has taken the Type 75 in a bold new direction. The Type 75 Mini Table Lamp features a more simplified design, with greater articulation and range of movement within the shade. It is ideal for bedside tables, compact desks and anywhere a smaller, neater profile is preferred.

The Type 75 Mini Table Lamp comes in three satin finish colours: Mole Grey, Umber Black and Turmeric Gold with brushed aluminium details.

It has a large, ergonomically designed On/Off switch on the base of the lamp so there is no more fumbling or stretching to use the lamp.

The new Type 75 Mini Table Lamp features Sir Kenneth’s signature light escape which create a ecorative ambient effect and light spill from the top of the shade.

Priced at an accessible £99, the lamp can be used in a variety of rooms and settings, whether it is for student digs, a compact bedroom makeover or a curated home office.

The Type 75 Mini Table Lamp is available from September 2020, and an LED 6W E27 replaceable bulb is provided. It is available to purchase on www.anglepoise.com or John Lewis & Partners online.

Manchester has long been a cultural and creative focus of the United Kingdom. Whether you are seeking the cosmopolitan, the creative or merely a crazy night out you’ll find it in spades in the city that Jeanette Winterson described as “… at once untamed and unmetropolitan; at the same time, connected and worldly.”

Located in the very heart of the city, exciting newcomer to the scene Hotel Brooklyn can be found a mere 450 yards from Canal Street. This 189 room boutique hotel has been beautifully designed, combining a feeling of warm welcome with flashes of a typical New York neighbourhood lining up alongside creative flourishes, unique furniture and facilities for every need.

Opened in February 2020, the hotel interiors were curated by renowned industry specialists The Squid Inc. As with sister hotel The Gotham, The Squid Inc team worked hard to highlight and enhance the original character of the building while adding distinctive touches along the way. Inherent to this was the imaginative use of original lighting solutions; the creative theme of “Brooklyn” required every detail to be iconic as well as enduring.

The original 1227 wall lights have been added to all 189 bedrooms in the hotel and were chosen for the instantly recognisable silhouette and distinctive features such as the classic braided flex and brass detailing.

Speaking from The Squid Inc, Interior Designer Oliver Redfern said “From the first stages of the design process, we were keen to find a British brand that could provide heritage with creativity and – crucially – who understood our aims. Anglepoise certainly didn’t disappoint. From the moment we received the first sample, the sense of quality meant we knew we had the right fitting.”

In his latest collaboration with Anglepoise, designer Paul Smith revisits a unique patchwork colour scheme previously created for a unique version of the Land Rover Defender. The palette now becomes the inspiration for another classic British design, the Type 75™ lighting collection created for Anglepoise by renowned British industrial product designer, Sir Kenneth Grange.

Anglepoise + Paul Smith Edition Four will be available from September 2019.

Paul’s original 27-colour palette alluded to the Defender’s past as a multi-purpose utilitarian workhorse, with reference to its use on the farmyard and in the emergency services. In his Edition Four palette Anglepoise British countryside colours dominate: deep, earthy burgundy, leaden grey, sky blue, dappled green and rich clay. Just a dash of fluorescent yellow adds that element of surprise we have come to expect from a designer renowned for his mastery of colour. When applied to the highly functional yet streamlined Type 75™ lamp design the palette appears tailor-made.

Anglepoise + Paul Smith Edition Four comprises a Type 75™ desk lamp in standard and Mini sizes, also a Type 75™ floor lamp, which is included for the first time in the Anglepoise and Paul Smith collection. All the new lamps will be available at www.anglepoise.com and at selected retailers worldwide from early September.

“I feel I’ve lived with Anglepoise® most of my life – school homework under the light of an original black square based Anglepoise®, and later acquiring various coloured styles designed in the 1960s and 70s. One favourite, rescued from a skip, is a Yellow Apex 90, later to inform the choice of Yellow Ochre for the re-modelled Type 75™ lamp.

Now, collaborating with Anglepoise® we have added Saxon Blue and Seagrass to Yellow Ochre to make an exclusive colour range for the Type 75™. We chose colours that we felt would act as accent colour and sit well in both a domestic and working interior.” – Margaret Howell

Continuing a successful and longstanding relationship, Anglepoise® and Margaret Howell are delighted to announce the September launch of two additional exclusive colours for the Type 75™ Anglepoise® desk lamp. The new colours chosen for the collection – Saxon Blue and Seagrass – complement the existing Yellow Ochre lamp.

Margaret Howell has frequently championed the Anglepoise® lamp, admiring the similar design qualities that are the essence of her men’s and women’s clothing: simplicity, functionality, authenticity and timelessness. Type 75™, designed in 2004 by British industrial product designer Sir Kenneth Grange, reinterprets the original 1930s Anglepoise® design. About Margaret Howell

Margaret Howell is a contemporary British clothing designer who started her business from a modest flat in South-East London over forty years ago. After graduating from a fine art degree at Goldsmith’ College, London in 1969 she began making accessories which came to the attention of Vogue and other fashion magazines, encouraging her to go onto designing clothes. This led to a partnership with Joseph Ettedgui and the opening of Howell’s first dedicated men’s shop in South Molton Street, London, 1976. The first independently owned Margaret Howell shop opened in St Christopher’s Place, London in 1980. In 2002 the company moved its London offices and prime shop to Wigmore Street, designed collaboratively with architect William Russell. As well as selling the men’s and women’s clothing collections, the shop is used to stage exhibitions that draw attention to aspects of British design. In 2007 Howell was made a Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Art and was awarded a CBE for services to the fashion industry.

In 2010 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University of the Arts London; in 2013, Howell was awarded an Honorary Professorship from the University for the Creative Arts. Margaret Howell is now sold worldwide with flagship shops in London, Paris, Florence and Tokyo and has more than 100 outlets throughout Japan.
